PACKET SWITCHING

  1. Data is broken into small packets

  2. Route is decided by collection of routers by using routing algorithm

  3. Next router is decided by forwading which is done by routing table

  4. If there is traffic then data packets are stored in queue & end packets are destroyed if there is buffer overflow in cache memory of router

CIRCUIT SWITCHING

  1. Before transmission route is decided and reserved

  2. There is no sharing of route like packet switching

  3. Circuits use can be divided among different users in domain of frequency or time

STRUCTURE OF TODAY'S INTERNET

  1. Mobile phones like devices are connected to access points

  2. These access points are connected to Internet service provider (local)

  3. These ISPs are connected to global ISP

  4. Different ISP companies share the data by using Internet Exchange Points (IXPs)
